ESTRATÉGIAS DE POVOAMENTO NO PALEOLÍTICO PORTUGUÊS

Resumo

A definição de padrões de ocupação do espaço para o período Paleolítico no território atualmente português apresenta-se como uma tarefa complicada. Esta dificuldade em sintetizar dados credíveis resulta de um conjunto de fatores que acrescentam um elevado número de incertezas em qualquer cenário que se queira traçar. Um dos fatores de maior relevância assenta na dimensão temporal que caracteriza este período. Desde os primeiros vestígios de ocupações humanas no território português ainda não datados e o final do período poderão estar aproximadamente um milhão de anos. Confrontados
com uma trama temporal tão extensa tentar generalizar pode levar ao desastre. 

Outra realidade a ter em atenção corresponde ao reduzido número de estações identificadas, escavadas e datadas. O estudo do Paleolítico português embora bem representado nos primeiros tempos da Arqueologia portuguesa atrai cada vez menos investigadores. Esta tendência reflete-se no número de estações intervencionadas e por conseguinte na quantidade dos dados fiáveis disponíveis. Mesmo com estações escavadas com rigor obter datações absolutas para o Paleolítico médio e inferior não tem sido tarefa fácil. Embora seja mais acessível conseguir balizar cronologicamente o Paleolítico superior, as margens de erro apresentadas pelas datações, tornam ilusórias aparentes contemporaneidades.

Serão estes constrangimentos obstáculo à definição de estratégias de povoamento para este período? Sem dúvida. Mas os dados que se vão recolhendo e publicando, embora escassos, permitem apresentar algumas hipóteses de trabalho. O incremento dos dados que se dispõe vai permitindo responder, pouco a pouco, e porque o tempo é relativo, a algumas das questões que se colocam sobre a forma como se intuía o espaço no período Paleolítico.

To unlock the patterns of Palaeolithic human space settlement in the Portuguese territory is a delicate task. The difficulty to gather credible data about this issue is the result of the amount of factors that increase highly the number of uncertainties in whether scenario we might draw.

One of the first factors results from the temporal range that defines this period. Since the first human ancestors steps in the territory actually known as Portugal, probably one million years had already past. Try to generalise data in such a huge time frame is a god starting point to disaster.

One other contingency to be aware for lay in the small number of sites that has been identified, excavated and directly dated. The investigation of Portuguese Palaeolithic, although well present in the dawn of Portuguese Archaeology, attracts nowadays less and less researchers. This tendency reflects in the number of sites under investigation and therefore in the amount of faithful data available. Even when a site goes under an accurate dig and reveals valuable data, reaching absolute dating for Lower and Middle Palaeolithic human occupation is not an easy task. For the Upper Palaeolithic, the diverse methodological dating techniques available allow a more precise chronological framework, but one should be aware for the error margin present in all dating, creating apparently contemporaneous sites.

Are all this constrains an obstacle to an understanding of Palaeolithic settlement patterns? Unfortunately, yes. Fortunately the scarce data that has been slowly collected and published allows the presentation of some working hypotheses. This slow flow data increase the knowledge about this remote period and allows, step by step, to unravel some of the tormenting questions one still have about how Palaeolithic humans understand their world.
