A Comunidade Judaica de Portalegre no Século XV
Keywords:
Alto Alentejo, Urbanisation, Jewish CommunityAbstract
The Jewish Quarter of Portalegre in the 15th century was a thriving community in the Alto Alentejo, composed mainly of artisan and merchant families. This study aims to explore the community and its economic life, highlighting its privileges and the complex relationships with the Christian majority. It also examines the role of the Jewish quarter as a refuge for Jews expelled from Castile in 1492, as well as discussing the historical problem of the synagogue's location and its surrounding area. Our goal is to contribute to a deeper understanding of Jewish history in Portugal, with a particular focus on the Alentejan border region.Downloads
