Abstract

The Assamassa kiln is located at the southern foot of the Serra de Sintra, within Quinta da Penha Longa and close to the monastery of the Jerónimos friars. It was one of the many lime kilns that operated on the slopes of the mountain until the mid-20th century. Identified in 2020 by the EMERITA team, it was excavated and sealed. With the data obtained, it is thought to have been in operation between the end of the 18th century and the 19th century. However, it is not certain whether the kiln's operation can be associated with the last decades of the convent as a monastic space or with one of the two owners who acquired the estate between 1836 and 1850. It is a well-built structure, which after excavation was preserved in situ under landfill.
